The Human Being
and the Animal World
Roy Wilkinson
$6.95
|
 |
|
Up to age nine, children do not differentiate
clearly between their own inner life and the
world outside. They experience the animals as
brothers and sisters who can speak and act as
human beings. Types of animals have been characterised
in the fables which Waldorf students ahve heard
in their early years. At age nine, the student
experiences the separation of him/herself from
the world. Teaching students about the relationship
of animals to human beings rebuilds the bridge
between the student and the world.
Contents include:
- Rudolf Steiner's Ideas on Evolution
- The Human Being and the Animal Compared
- The Group Soul
- The Threefold Human Being
- The Cow
- The Horse
- The Elephant
- The Lion
- The Camel
- The Dog
- Birds and Fish

Botany
Charles Kovacs
Softbound
$16.95
|
 |

|
|
Charles Kovacs' ability to knowledgeably present any part of the Waldorf curriculum with warmth,
grace and depth never ceases to amaze and delight me. His lesson notes, no matter the subject,
are always useful and inspiring and interesting in the way that non-fiction seldom is.
In Botany, Kovacs provides a tour de force through the Waldorf 5th/6th grade
Botany curriculum - He beautifully characterizes and describes different plants and the families
of which they are a part, how they look, how they grow, where they live, what they do. There
are sketches illustrating key features, chapters about seeds, butterflies, pollen in addition
to those about specific plants and plant types. At the end is a long section about the plants
we human beings use.
All of this is prefaced with one of the best essays I've ever read about the developmental
stage of the 5th and 6th grader, and how to meet their needs educationally.
Another great Kovacs book - what a gift to students and teachers, whether in the classroom
or at home!

The Living World
of the Plants
A Book for Children and Students of Nature
Dr. Gerbert Grohmann
Softbound
$16.00
|
 |

|
|
This book can be thought of as a distillation of Grohmann's extensive
two-volume study, The Plant.
Here, the material is presented in a way that will engage both younger
students and the adults who teach them. I find that in many ways, The
Living World of Plants, is much more powerful in its capacity
to evoke awe at the truly amazing world of plants than his more detailed
presentation in The Plant. If you are not conversant with the plant
world, but would like to be, this is the book for you. An excellent
source book for teachers of all grade levels, whether in school or
at home. Can be useful as a reader for children grades 5 and up.

Botany
Christopherus Unit Study #2
Donna Simmons
Folder Bound
$17.00
|
 |

|
|
I've always been partial to the Waldorf school fifth grade curriculum -- to me it is balanced and beautiful
the way children at that age are, each subject bearing itself gracefully into the classroom.
Botany is one of those subjects, and Donna Simmon's introduction and overview of this main lesson block
is as inviting and lively as the subject itself. It seems to me that she has given both children and
the adults who teach them a guided tour of the plant world that will leave everyone in love with nature
and knowledgable about our leafy and rooted friends. Needless to say, I'm smitten -- I think you will
be, too, after you see this Unit Study.
Contents:
- Main Lessons for Homeschoolers
- Why Study Botany
- Goals for this Block
- Lesson Plans
- Looking at Plants
- Development of the Senses
- Botany Activities
- Plants and Their Environment

Keeping a Nature Journal
Discover a Whole New Way of Seeing the World Around You
Clare Walker Leslie & Charles E Roth
Foreword by Edward O Wilson
Softbound, beautifully illustrated in pen and ink drawings and watercolor
$18.95
|
 |

|
Clare Walker Leslie's work is so invaluable in the field of nature study, for all ages everywhere. We use it in our Roots & Shoots program to help young people sharpen their observation skills and deepen their connection with nature.
- Jane Goodall
Founder, The Jane Goodall Institute
For many years now, both Bob and I have felt strongly that there was a need to offer 6th, 7th and 8th grade students (and high school students, for that matter) more direct contact with living nature than the conventional Waldorf curriculum calls for. In our view, our modern world has become so very separated from the Life of the world, that it has become a pedagogical need to balance that reality with something more.
Keeping a Nature Journal offers a beautiful, lively way to do just this - and to do it in the contexts of Steiner's phenomenological approach to science, drawing & painting, and upper grades composition writing. Whether in a classroom or homeschool setting, this book opens doorways to really seeing our world and in the process, also really seeing ourselves and each other. It is simply a gifted work of art, something anyone who teaches will want to discover for themselves. There is even an entire section devoted to ways of teaching this to both children and adults.
Our hope is that the offering of this book will lead many more adults to travel the seasons with their students, and to share the love for nature that grows from such a journey. |

Muscles and Bones
Grades 7 & 8 Curriculum Resource
Charles Kovacs
Softbound
$20.00
|
 |

|
It amazes me each time a new book by Charles Kovacs appears that a single person could gift so very many with the fruits of his work. In Kovacs' case, these gifts seem to just continue to pour out into the world.
Muscles and Bones is a wonderful overview of the material to be covered in the human physiology, anatomy, health and hygiene blocks of the Waldorf curriculum for Grades 7 and 8. It is illustrated throughout with really wonderful drawings and conveyed in the clear and insightful prose we have all come to expect from Kovacs. Kovacs' is someone whose soul-strength continues to work powerfully within the world even after his passing. This is simply great material! |

Baravalle clearly loved his subject, because that love radiates from every page. This is a book that will fire enthusiasm in young and old, and what is learned here and by carrying out the exercises will remain throughout a lifetime. A great little treasure, this one!
