Rebbe Nachman of Breslav once instructed his students to pray
by pouring out their hearts to God - whisper, shout, laugh,
cry - give to that which created you all that lies on your
soul. In so doing, he said, we will begin to notice that the
Divine answers, sometimes quietly, sometimes in a blaze of
lightening, with wisdom, insight, compassion, strength. It
is never a one-sided conversation.
The entirety of Songs to the Invisible God is just
such a prayer - an offering of all the joys and sorrows, all
the wisdom and folly of the human heart. Each prayer sung
by this master of Judaic vocal tradition moves out from a
deep longing for a touch from the Infinite Absolute - and
offers up the vastness of human life as part of the journey
toward our source.
As I listened to this unique and remarkable recording, I
was simply awe struck, filled with wonder at the varieties
of human relationships to the Divine - and at the possibility
of making both our successes and failures gifts to God.
